Published January 8, 2007 in the Webster Herald Trash Can Lacrosse Tourney For one day at least, Webster Thomas Varsity Lacrosse coach Rob Ruller was delighted to see his players “talking trash.” The First Trash Can Lacrosse Tournament, held on at the Webster Thomas field house on Dec. 16, gave players of all ages an opportunity to enjoy the game they love while also supporting a great cause. The tournament was a four on four lacrosse competition using garbage pails as goals and basketball courts as the fields. Each match up lasted 10 minutes and the only equipment worn was helmets and gloves. Best of all, the tournament resulted in a generous donation of nonperishable goods for the Webster Community Chest.
The coach said he turned on the music and let the boys officiate
their own games. The rules of the game were modified to allow
players of ages, from the modified level through Varsity, to
play together.
Ruller commented that his players had fun and raised a lot of donations for the food cupboard. “We, as coaches, feel that we have the power to make some great things happen, and we need to just provide our athletes with opportunities,” said Ruller. “We had an awesome time. I think that we have started something that is really wonderful. I see this thing getting bigger every year. The younger kids will know that this is something we do as a program, and by the responses I got from them they are all for it.” The Titan Varsity players once again demonstrated their “off-the-field” spirit on Dec. 31, when players volunteered as a team to lend a hand with the New Years Eve festivities at Hill Haven Nursing Home. The athletes helped transport residents to and from the party and assisted with games and other activities throughout the afternoon. Webster Thomas Varsity Lacrosse coach Rob Ruller, pictured here with son, Ethan, 3, said he is proud of the way his players came together at the Trash Can Lacrosse Tournament to have fun and support a good cause. |
