GAME RECAPS 2008

Thomas 14 - McQuaid 9 (Class A Quarterfinal)

McQuaid scored the first two goals, starting with one at 10:54 and the second 47 seconds later. Senior middie Nick Caton scored the first on an unassisted drive from the top left side. After the face off was won by Thomas, Nick Scalzo put one in the cage, but it was waved off when the officials said he entered the crease before the score. Corey Flanigan scored for the Knights on a sweep to the right.

The next three goals were by Thomas starting with a man up goal by freshman attackman Kyle Rothfuss with an assist from senior attackman Max Gurowski. The shot bounced right under McQuaid goalie, Danny Caufield's stick. At 5:57 after clearing the ball, Gurowski circled the cage just past the goal line extended, turned back sharply and passed the ball to Scalzo on the opposite corner. Gurowski assisted on the next goal, when he moved the ball from behind the net to Pat Morrill in front.

With the score 3-2, McQuaid tied the game on an unassisted goal by Mitch Ritchie, after his defender was picked off behind the goal. Ritchie worked his way to the top of the crease and scored with an underhand shot. At 1:55 McQuaid took the lead with a wing feed from Eric Wright to Nick Wolak. Thirty seconds later Thomas ended the scoring in the first quarter and tied it back up at 4-4 with a Gurowski feed to Brad Hutton. Gurowski assisted on all four Titan goals and the quarter ended with a 4-4 tie.

Thomas started man up for three minutes when McQuaid was assessed a 3:00 non-releasable stick penalty at the start of the quarter. Although the Titans were not able to score on that penalty, the did score on two others, as the Knights were hit with five and a half minutes of penalties in the second quarter. Kyle LaVallee scored after cutting inside the man down zone and catching the ball thrown by Jack Hinderland from behind the cage. Later, Scalzo scored in man up, throwing a hard side arm shot after receiving the ball from Brad Hutton. McQuaid closed the half with two goals in about a minute, the first of which was scored unassisted by Nick Caton with a strong sidearm to the top right corner of the cage. The second was scored by Ritchie who backed in from the corner of the cage and the half ended in a 6-6 tie.

Just 47 second into the third quarter Thomas scored the go ahead goal when Hinderland scored an unassisted goal on a sweep to the left. After a great deal of transition Thomas scored another goal when JT Hauck scored on a sweep at 4:36. The Knights came back with a goal at 4:09 as Ritchie backed into the goal and dished the ball to Jeff MacDonald for the goal. The Titans saw a goal from Scalzo when he was able to sneak to the corner of the cage and one hand it past Caufield to give Thomas a 9-7 lead at the end of three quarters.

The Titans took control at the top of the fourth quarter scoring four goals in just under six minutes. After passing the ball around the goal numerous times, LaVallee scored the first (unassisted) after dodging inside and putting a shot the top right corner. Billy Gurowski sent the ball to Morrill who cut in parallel and finished with a quick stick shot. A minute and a half later Scalzo moved the ball to Hauck who scored on an open net when the Knights cleared the cage to double the ball. Scalzo, who had a shot, instead passed the ball to Hauck who had a better shot. Scalzo got his goal at 3:15 when he received the ball from Tomeno on a fast break clear. After a McQuaid time out, Corey Flanigan scored an unassisted goal at 3:00 on a clear out play. Scalzo scored a man up goal for Thomas at 1:40 after receiving a cross crease feed from LaVallee. With under a minute left, Ritchie scored the last goal of the game after muscling in from a tight crease cut from behind the cage.

One key in the game was the excellent play by senior defenseman Jake Ziegler who for most of the game drew the assignment to guard Ritchie who before the game was second in Section Five scoring (with 68) and points (with 95). Ziegler had several important take aways and was able to keep Ritchie from dominating in the game. Although the high powered attackman did score 3g-1a (4 pts) which is just under his average 5.2, Ziegler and Andrew Glagolev (who took over the assignment for part of the third quarter) did a fine job in keeping him from playing "his game".

Scoring for Thomas were JT Hauck (2g), Kyle Rothfuss (1g), Max Gurowski (4a), Nick Scalzo (5g-1a), Pat Morrill (2g), Brad Hutton (1g-1a), Kyle LaVallee (2g-1a), Jack Hinderland (1g-1a), Bill Gurowski (1a) and Kenny Tomeno (1a). James O`Neil recorded 11s/9ga for the Titans (14-4) who advance to the semi finals on Tuesday (at Aquinas) to face Canandaigua (5:00 PM).

Thomas 14- Hilton 6

Thomas defeated Hilton 14-6 in their outbracket game. Coach Rob Ruller of the Titans reports both teams played a "tough physical match-up."

Hilton opened up the scoring with a goal from Matt Davidson, Davidson intercepted the ball on the opening face-off and took the ball all the way down and scored. Max Gurowski and Brad Hutton added goals for the Titans to take the lead 2-1 after the first quarter. The second quarter remained close as the Titans hit four pipes. The half ended 4-2.

In the third quarter the Titans won 6-2 and took a strong lead which they held onto in the fourth quarter.

Scoring for Thomas were Jack Hinderland (5g), Billy Gurowski (2g), Brad Hutton (1g-1a), Kyle LaVallee (1g-1a), Nick Scalzo (1g-1a), Max Gurowski (1g), Pat Morrill (1g), JT Hauck (1g) and Kyle Rothfuss (1g).

Thomas 10 - Schroeder 3

redspot In a close game emotons always run high. but when it's the last game of the regular season and both teams come from Webster and with Sectional seeding on the line, emotions really run high. Although a very close game for most of the first half, Thomas took control and scored five goals in a row to take a 7-3 lead after three and end the game up 10-3.

The game was dominated by excellent defensive play by both teams, although, in the end, the agressiveness of the Thomas defense (particularly Jake Ziegler, Andrew Glagolev and Mason Hill), and some fantastic saves by goalie James O`Neil created the ball time for the Titan offense to open up the game.

The majority of the first quarter saw patient offenses by both teams that meant moving the ball around the outside with a few aborted drives. The defenseive units, also being patient, waited for opportunities to get possession of the ball. Clears were largely successful and the ball went back and forth. The first goal wasn't scored until Schroeder's Chris Mason beat two Thomas defensers and bounced the ball over Scott Tota's shoulder. A minute and a half later, Thomas tied the score on an unassisted goal by defenseman Jake Ziegler who on a clear, took the ball all the way to the goal. The quarter ended with the teams tied at one.

A change in defensive intensity took place in the sceond quarter as Thomas became more aggressive on the ball and Schroeder sagged off more, preventing, for the most part, inside feeds, but giving the Titan offense more ball time on the outside, but liomiting the number of shots taken. At 9:38, JT Hauck received the ball out front (from Max Gurowski) and with a powerful sidearm shot scored off skip hip. After more transition and with 2:43 left in the half, Schroeder had a goal from Chris Mason (unassisted) with a drive from top left. Thomas returned with two quick goals to end the half. Nick Scalzo took a feed from William Gurowski, bulled his way into the high crease under heavy pressure and hip-checked the defender to get enough room to should around him.

On the next face off, Schroeder won the ball, but Thomas took it away and started up field on the sprint. Kyle LaVallee received the ball from Kenny Tomeno and after dodging one outside defenseman, took a bounce shot that scored. Schroeder was hit with and illegal check penalty. After the face off Jack Hinderland got the ball for Thomas and after beating an outside defended took a beautiful shot that was saved by Tota. Thomas broke the clear and Hinderland had another shot which bounced off the goal. The half ended with Thomas up 4-2, but with both teams playing like winners.

In the third quarter, Thomas took control, scoring three lone goals while behaving more like there were the better team. Schroeder was still very much in the game, but the Titans began to behave like they were in control. Hinderland, who was still bothered by his two missed goals at the end of the half, scored the first goal in the second half. After cutting to the crease, her recievd the ball, but found no shot. On his way "to daylight" he turned and scored at 11:13. Kenny Thomeno added a garbage goal at 9:04 after a save by Tota bounced in front of the cage. Nick Scalzo received a cross crease pass from Gurowski at 7:44 giving the titans a 7-2 third quarter lead.

The Warriors scored early in the fourth quarter when Cody Consul received and pass from Pete Noto behind the cage. While the Schroeder defense was still in sag off, they ran a shutoff against Gurowski that was successful in keeping him from the scorebook at that point, but the Titans, simply used other players to get the job done. There was a generaly lack of urgency by the Warriors on both ends of the field. Kyle LaVallee scored with an assist from Scalzo in man up at 8:27. They scored again at 6:30 while man down. Gurowski took the ball from out of bounds and was doubled by Schroder, While running from the double whe found Pat Morrill who quickly moved the ball to Scalzo on the crease who faked high and shot low on Tota. Schroeder started to pick up a number of penalties at this point, and although Thomas was content with ball possession rather than shots. Hinderland found Kyle Rothfuss on the inside for another Titan goal at 2:17 which ended the scoring.

Scoring for Thomas were Nick Scalzo (3g-1a), Kyle LaVallee (2g), Max Gurowski (2a), Kenny Tomeno (1g-1a), Jack Hinderland (1g-1a), single goals by Jake Ziegler, JT Hauck and Kyle Rothfus and a single assist by William Gurowski and Pat Morrill. James O'Neil had 9s/3ga for Thomas who finish the regular season at 12-7.

Scoring for Schroeder were Chris Mason (2g), Cody Consul (1g) and Pete Noto (1a). Scott Total had 9s/10ga for the Warriors who end their season at 8-8.

Thomas 11 - HFL 9

In an exciting Monroe County Division 2 game, Thomas fought off HFL numerous times to prevail 11-9 over the Cougars.

HFL's Cade Norris scored the first goal of the game only 0:38 into the competition. Norris, who is a cornerstone of the HFL offense, finished the game with 2g-1a. Three different Thomas players scored in the first quarter; Nick Scalzo, Pat Morrill and Jack Hinderland.  The Titans led 3-1 at the end of the first quarter.

The Titans kept up the pressure in the second quarter with Hinderland adding his second 0:28 into the quarter. Matt Lesczynski scored for HFL to keep the game close at 4-2 Thomas. Hinderland added his third and Max Gurowski added his lone goal of the game to take Thomas to a 6-2 lead going into halftime. The Titans appeared to have the game in control.

At halftime, the Cougars got their act together. Goals from Zach Whyte and Bryan Gardner were the lone goals for either team in the quarter as the Cougars cut Thomas' lead to two (6-4). HFL continued their hard play, both offensively and defensively with two more goals from Tyler Burgasser and Mike Coady. The Cougars had tied the game at 6-6 with 10:36 remaining in the final quarter.

Thomas and HFL traded goals for two goals with scoring from Morrill (both); and Mike Coady and Zach Whyte. The score was still tied 8-8 with 5:36 remaining in the game. Thomas scored with 4:41, 3:59 and 2:10 remaining to take the three goal lead (11-8). Norris added his only other goal at 1:59, but the Cougars could not mount yet another comeback and the Titans held on to remain undefeated in D-2.

In the cage, Jay Tallon finished at 50% (11s/11ga) for the Cougars and Austin Fox finished with 7s/9ga for the Titans.

One aspect that led to the Titans win was Extra-man. HFL had four opportunities (including a two man slash and unsportsmanlike conduct opportunity), but failed to capitalize. The Titans, on the other hand, scored on two of their five opportunities.

Scoring for Thomas were Morrill (4g), Hinderland (3g), Tomeno (1g-1a), Gurowski (1g-1a), Kyle Rothfuss (1g), Scalzo (1g)

Thomas 8 - Fairport 7

redspot Webster Thomas controlled the majority of the game and despite a heroic comeback by Fairport, beat the Red Raiders 8-7 at Thomas on Tuesday.

The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair ending in a 3-3 tie. Fairport scored just 15 seconds into the game when Aaron Jones scored the first of his 4g-1a when he received the ball from the face off area, took it behind the goal and then ran a wide cut around the cage for a shot from the goalie's right.

After a couple of transitions, Nick Scalzo scored on a beautiful feed from Jake Ziegler as they executed a textbook fast break clear. Martin Mailla dodged his Thomas defender and took an outside shot at 5:54 giving Fairport a momentary lead before Max Gurowski scored on an isolation play less than a minute later.Eric Hislop scored at 1:40 on a feed from the top left by Jones but the Titans returned at 0:55 when JT Hauck scored on a clearing pass from William Gurowski. The teams were tied at three at te end of the first quarter.

Jones started the scoring for Fairport just 25 seconds into the second quarter but the rest of the quarter and the whole third quarter was controlled by Thomas. The Titan offense was slow, deliberate and patient, moving the ball around the cage numerous times before testing a Fairport defenseman and moving the ball again. The plan was susccessful, both in producing goals and also keeping the ball away from the Fairport offense, who, feeling the pressure to score, rushed many opportunities and allowed a stoked up Thomas defense to gain posession on numerous occasions.

Tomeno scored the first of a five goal run by the Titans when he received a crease pass from Max Gurowski from restraining line and scored on a turn-around jump shot at 8:46. Scalzo scored again, this time on a cross crease pass from Gurowski as he cranking a hard side-arm shot past Fairport's Kris Sterzin. The shot was set up with more than a minute and a half of passing around the goal. Gurowski later picked up a critical ground ball on a broken clear and quickly sent it to the crease were Jack Hinderland was ready and open for the score. The half ended with Thomas up 6-4.

The Thomas defense became more aggressive in the second half, hounding the Fairport offense at every opportunity and often creating doubles and takeaways. Although Fairport had opportunities they were limited in low quality outside shots and the few inside shots they got were taken away by Austin Fox who made a number of exciting stops for the Titans. Thomas increased their lead by two in the third quarter with two goals by Hauck (assisted by Pat Morrill). The Titan defense which centered around Jake Ziegler, Brad Hutton, Mason Hill and LSM Kenny Tomeno had an excellent game in front of Austin Fox. Their hussle and aggressiveness was tempored by solid team defensive play and ensured the Titans offense had the bulk of ball time in the second and third quarters of the game.
With the score 8-6 and just under six minutes left to play, Fairport gained possession and took a couple of shots that were saved by Fox, but retained from ground balls by Fairport.

At 2:46 Hislop swept right and took a hard side arm shot that sailed high into the right corner taking the Red Raiders to within one. Fairport set up a number of shots with Fox looking directly into the sun. Although the Red Raiders had two or three shots in the last two minutes, they were unable to tie the game.

Scoring for Thomas were Nick Scalzo (2g), Max Gurowski (1g-2a), JT Hauck (3g), Kenny Tomeno (1g), Jack Hinderland (1g), Jake Ziegler (1a), William Gurowski (1a) and Pat Morrill (2a). Austin Fox made 18s/7ga for the Titans (8-4).

Thomas got on the board quickly when Kyle Lavallee won the face off passed the ball to attackmen Jack Hinderland who found Nick Scalzo who then hit Lavallee cutting to the goal. Thomas controlled the ball for the next five minutes getting many quality opportunities but many were off cage and others were saved by the Brighton goalie, Kyle Hohmann. Brighton then got on the board when attackmen Evan Davis came around from "X" and scored. The next Titan goal came from Nick Scalzo who scored (unassisted) at 4:07. Austin Fox played well in the goal for the Titans recording 5 saves in two halves of play.

The Titan offense kept it rolling as Billy Gurowski got in on the action on an assist from Nick Scalzo. Then it was Scalzo finding Kyle Lavallee on a great feed across the backside. Kenny Tomeno dodged down the alley for his second goal of the quarter finishing the scoring for the half with the Titans up 9-1.

Jimmy O`Neil took over in cage in the Second half and the Titan defense didn’t miss a beat. Brighton scored their second and only goal of the half on a man up situation when Mark Hendricks scored. Sophomore attackmen Jack Hinderland found the back of the net on an assist from Nick Scalzo. Freshmen JT Hauck who got into the action with an assist from Nick Scalzo at 5:15 in the second. The fourth quarter saw the Titans continue to roll. Sophomore Brad Hutton along with Senior Tom Monna and freshmen Kyle Rothfuss were now running the show on offense. Thomas was expecting to see some zone defense from the Saints, and went to work early in the first quarter, running zone-breaking offenses that were usually successful. Jack Hinderland was first up and scored on a feed from Billy Gurowski who found him on the left wing. A few minutes later, Nick Scalzo sent the ball across the crease for Gurowski's goal. After a shot bounced loose in front of the crease, Keith Preston scooped it up and popped it in for Churchville's first goal. The Titans scored the next three to finish the quarter with a 5-1 advantage. Scalzo scored on a fast break feed from Kyle LaValee from the face off, scoring seven seconds later. Scalzo passed to Kenny Tomeno who bounced the shot into the top of the net and Kyle Rothfuss scored after receiving the ball on a substitution and taking it right to the goal.

Thomas spent quite a bit of time in the first half passing the ball around the perimeter where they were generally unmolested by the C-C defense. Both teams scored two goals in the second quarter. Thomas was first when, at 9:06, Hinderland took a hard outside side-arm shot that sailed over the Sean Kettles' goalie stick and into the net. Churchville came right back when David Peck broke through a Titan double team and ran an unencumbered "B" cut around from the back of the net for a shot on the cage at the goal line extended. The Saints scored again, taking the scored to 6-3, when Damien Pagano scored a man up goal on a feed (from Gino Marcello) diagonally through the Thomas man-down zone. Penfield used a third quarter surge to defeat Thomas 11-8

redspot The game began on a dark note, as the power was off and the lights would not turn on at McAvoy Park. Although the darkness was coming, the coaches decided to start the game and see what would happened. The first quarter saw good defense by both teams. In the the third quarter the Patriot offense scored six goals while holding the Titans to four shots. In the final quarter, Thomas showed the same drive they had in the first half and tied the quarter 3-3, scoring two goals within the last two minutes as they attempted to fight back.
